Dead Sea, Vitiligo

Dead Sea: Post consultation with Dr Karin Schallreuter

Apologies for the huge delay in getting this post up, it’s been hectic since I got back from Germany and apparently, I brought the flu back with me!

Not only that, but the last few months have been very difficult and mentally, the Vitiligo is affecting me more than ever. It could be because I’m much more aware of the condition seeing as I’m actively searching to improve it but I it just seems to be playing on my mind a bit more.

This is going to be a long one!

OK, so the morning after the mental day of travelling mentioned in my previous post, I arrived at the Institute for Pigmentary Disorders which I believe is part of the University of Greifswald.

At reception(on the first floor), I was directed to the waiting room where I met 4 other Vitiligo sufferers also waiting for consultation. Initially,  Dr Schallreuter came in and spoke to us all together. She went through a detailed medical diagnosis of Vitiligo and gave the science behind her own developed Pseudocatalse cream.

My(uneducated) understanding of the Pseudocatalse cream is to counter the high oxidative stress that is common in the skin of almost all Vitiligo sufferers. People that have Vitiligo tend to have low catalase activity and this in turn stops the necessary reduction of of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the skin.

The Pseudocatalse cream has to be applied to the entire body once or twice a day depending on the severity of the Vitiligo. With application of the cream, you must stop using any products with fragrance on the skin, so no soaps or nice smelling deodorant. I believe there are fragrance-less products that you can use. In terms of hair washing, you should only be using things like baby shampoo. For women, you have to be extra careful with make-up  and there are some special type of cosmetics that are safe to use but I didn’t take note of these.

It is 95 Euro per bottle(I forget the size, possibly 500ml?) and you can order it from Germany to be delivered to your country. I believe it was about 35 euro shipping to Europe.

Dr Schallreuter then went on to demonstrate her primary treatment method, UVB light. She recommends the use of the Dermalight 1000 or the Dermalight 80 in very small doses(in my case, approximately 30 seconds a day for 30 days and then increased to twice a day) to “activate” the Pseudocatalse cream. This, I believe is where it differs from the usual doctors recommendation where they slowly increase the time UVB light over time eventually getting to near to 10 minutes per session. Dr Schallreuter keeps her doses low to ensure there is no risk of any side effects(skin cancer, blistering etc).

Dr Schallreuter went on to talk about the climotherapy trip to the Dead Sea which she runs once a year. There is no “miracle” here as some websites would have you believe, Jordon’s climate acts as natural Narrowband-UVB. In conjunction with using the  Pseudocatalse cream, you bath in the Dead Sea for 20mins which is 400m below sea level and the salt concentration is 28-36% and also acts as  Pseudocatalse.

We then as a group had an opportunity to ask any questions. I am paraphrasing here from memory but questions that were asked included:

Q: Does diet affect Vitilgo?

A: No, apart from green tea and certain spicy foods because of additives that they contain that can increase the oxidation in the skin.

Q: Following on from diet, what are your views on Nutritional Therapy?

A: I have seen cases relating to low Folic Acid and Vitamin B12, but if your blood count is ok, there is no medical evidence to prove that taking excessive amounts of vitamins can treat Vitiligo.

Q: Recently, Ginko Biloba has had some success in treating Vitiligo. Is it safe to take it?

A: Again, no conclusive medical research that it helps Vitiligo, but it is safe to take.

Following the Q&A, we were each taken in for our private consultation. I sat down with Dr Schallreuter, we discussed my depigmented patches and also any previous treatments I had tried. I stood(completely naked!) in darkened room, where Dr Schallreuter and her assistant(Angela) scanned me with a UV light to discover all Vitiligo patches. I was then asked to apply the Pseudocatalse to my whole body to test for any allergic reaction.

Following all consultations,  our group went into Griefswald center square and had some lunch, it was good to hear other stories and treatments that had been tried. It also gave me some appreciation of how mild my Vitiligo was in comparison. We met again for drinks that night in the hotel and since Germany stay in contact through a Facebook group.

The next day, we were asked to be at the University between 7.30 – 8.00am for a series of blood tests. The results would determine what concentration of  Pseudocatalse cream would be used and there were also test for how quickly phenylalanine was absorbed into the blood(if I remember correctly).  This followed another consultation where Dr Schallreuter set out a UVB time plan depending on if you were buying either of the Dermalight Lamps. In my case, I only really cared about treating my face at this point, so I opted for the Dermalight 80. I’ll go into what results I’ve had using the lamp in another post.

As for the Dead Sea, there was not a huge amount confirmed or discussed. Dr Schallreuter just said that once the dates and prices are finalised I would e-mailed with booking instructions.

That was it!

Going to Germany was really just a mandatory pre-requisite so that I could attend the Dead Sea Trip. I hadn’t really considered the lamp until it was suggested during the consultation. I felt it wouldn’t hurt in such low doses to give it a go. I had a good experience but only time will tell if the treatments(both UVB light and Dead Sea) are effective. Dr Schallreuter is a very professional and nice woman, she can be very direct and sometimes borders on blunt but she does inspire confidence and give hope.

I will warn that communication via e-mail can be very poor, a number of our group have complained about getting delayed responses and sometimes even ignored. Fortunately, I haven’t experienced this.

I may have missed some bits so I’ll probably update when I remember but feel free to ask any questions in the comments. Sorry for the delay in not replying to some of the others, I wasn’t getting notified correctly through e-mail of a new comment.

More to come.

    Thanks for information

I have had vitiligo patch on my mouth for 3yrs. If that cream is applied with out going to the dead sea, will it go away or u have to go to the dead sea

    Regards

      Hi JO,

The face is usually the easiest place to repigment from UVB treatments but everyone is different. It may not be necessary for you to go the Dead Sea, I’d recommend trying the UVB lamp and the PC-KUS cream.

    Q: Does diet affect Vitilgo?

A: No, apart from green tea and certain spicy foods because of additives that they contain that can increase the oxidation in the skin.

    — This confuses me. Green tea is supposed to be anti-oxidant, reducing the production of free molecules.
FYI, the immune system goes on over drive and kills melanocytes because it “thinks” them as to be free molecules which cannot be “paired” and hence destroys them. Green tea is supposed to reduce oxidants which produce free molecules in the body!

      Hi Daisy,
      Don´t be worried 🙂
They book a group of people (we were 7 patients + parents/friends to some of the patients) and you will start with a group information meeting – the professor gives all kind of information and you can also ask questions! Look at it this way: Some of the other people in the group might ask questions that you haven´t thought of! And you get to meet people who is in the same boat as you 🙂
After that you will have your own individual consultations with the professor! These consultations are strictly private.
I hope this answers your questions! I wish you good luck 🙂

      • Reply Daisy September 16, 2014 at 8:32 am

Thank you so much for your answer. i was worried that i has been double booked.

        • Reply Flavio September 16, 2014 at 9:24 pm

          Hi All,

I was booked to Oct 8th 2PM, but I gave it up. I tried to give the time slot to Tay, but Angela (professor’s secretary) didn’t allow that. She said there were other people in the waiting list (sounds fair).
The reason I gave up was that I pretty much know how the consultation is. When I went to Dead Sea (by myself) in July /2014, I met a lot of patients of hers that told me how it was. I crossed all the information and realized that it was not going to be worth flying from USA to Germany to hear what I had heard before.
I will summarize what I know in the next post.

  • Reply Flavio September 16, 2014 at 9:40 pm

Simon has already detailed how the consultation is. Find his post. What really matters, is the treatment that she suggests to most of patients (maybe all). It is:

    1- Anti-oxidant
    2- Pseudocatalase
3- Sun bath or UVB-NB exposure

I will detail these 3 items above.

1-She has her own anti-oxidant that mix 3 items: L-Methionine, Alpha Lipoic Acid and L-Cysteine. You can buy it at Amazon or ebay (select brand Pure Encapsulation or Nutrabio).

2- She sells her pseudocatalase cream that can be done yourself easily. I have posted how to do it. Find it or ask me how. This pseudocatalase cream has to be applied 2x a day.

3- If you don’t have an UVB-NB equipment, you will have to apply it before 9AM and after 5PM. After applying, wait 20 minutes and then take a sun bath (remember: before 9AM and after 5PM). Expose the white spots for 5 minutes each to the sun. Total time can be longer than 30 minutes.

4- If you have an UVB-NB equipment, find out (or ask me) the real UVB-NB irradiation power. Expose the patches to 250 milijoules of UVB-NB. For example, if you have a 9W Philips bulb, it irradiates 1,13mw. So, you have to expose the patches for 250 / 1,13 = 220 seconds (each).

Please don’t hesitate to make questions.

        Max,

It’s the best treatment available. It varies from person to person.
However, you should follow a complete Functional Treatment that includes pseudocatalase and other actions.

No, they don’t accept walk-ins. If you go there like this, it will be at a big risk of losing time and money. You have to insist a lot. They receive so many emails daily, so that they assign priority to the ones that show more will and despair.
That happened to me. After 10 emails begging for an answer, they replied to me and scheduled an appointment for 3 months ahead.
During the waiting time, I spoke with so many people that had been there, and I also collected so much information about Prof’s treatment, that I realized it would be worth going to German anymore. So I cancelled the appointment. Please read : http://www.vitiligomap.com/germantreat.html and also http://www.vitiligomap.com/pseudo.html

    Hi Friends,
I’ve been studying a lot how to do a non-invasive melanocyte autologus stem cell transplantation (at home or at your family doctor clinic). It took me 4 months and 3 very thick books, to get to a step-by-step procedure, that has to be shared with a Doctor. Everything has to be sterilized.
The good thing is that the whole procedure takes about 2 hours. The procedure can be repeated as many times as you want, respecting a proper recovery interval. The total investment is around US$ 300, for 10 procedures. No air ticket, not hotel, etc.
I do believe it’s worth a try, and I will in a close future.

    Procedure:
1- Pluck the hair with a forceps or a good tweezer. 20 hair follicles are enough for 1cm2 and put them on a petri #1. Hair bulb have to come together (as intact as possible).
    Petri#1

    2- Add 10ml of 0.025% trypsin-EDTA solution to petri #1. Use a dropper.

    US$ 11.85 (100ml)
3- Put petr #1 in a incubator for 30 min at 37 Celsius degree.

4- Transfer the hair follicles to another petri #2.
    Petri#2

5- Add 5ml of trypsin inhibitor to petr #1 to avoid melanocyte digestion.

    US$ 36.62 (100ml)

6- Keep petri #1 separated apart (waiting).

    7- Add 10ml of 0.025% trypsin-EDTA to petri#2.

8- Put petr #2 in a incubator for 30 min.

9- Transfer the hair follicles to another petri #3.
    Petri#3

10- Add 5ml of trypsin inhibitor to petr #2 to avoid melanocyte digestion.

11- Keep petri #2 separated apart (waiting).

    12- Add 10ml of 0.025% trypsin-EDTA to petri#3

13- Put petr #3 in a incubator for 30 min. Add 5ml of trypsin inhibitor to petr #3 to avoid melanocyte digestion.

14- Throw the hair away and mix all petri (#1, #2, and #3) contents.

15- Filter the combined solution with a 70um strainer.

This article is pretty much “paid advertising”. Sorry about that.

This lab spent a lot of money producing this drug for RA and the sales were very disappointing. They want to sell it desperately. Btw, it’s very expensive.

The only documented vitiligo case treated by this drug is the one mentioned in the article. If you read the medical paper (original source) it says that the woman’s patches were partially reverted overall (50%).
So far, there is no evidence it’s a cure, however I agree that it’s a big hope.
Last, but not least, I tend to accept the fact that joint stress has to do a lot with vitiligo…

Hi John and to any others looking at trying the Professor’s treatment… I have finally managed to secure an appointment (Dec 5th!) after making initial contact back in March 2016… responses have been sporadic from the institute – I can only assume they have many many people trying to avail of the treatment – from my experience:
    – be prepared to be patient and wait for both responses and an appointment.. my experience has been me sending many chasers and waiting weeks if not months for a reply.. for example, my last contact was back in September 2016 and then I got >3 weeks notice about an available appt slot – which I didn’t feel I could turn down or seek alternative (more fitting with my diary commitments!) times! Am sure it’s great if you’re a German local but when you live in the UK, not entirely convenient
    – it’s expensive… whilst I was fortunate enough to have airmiles such that my flight from the UK to Berlin is £35 (bargain!), the cost of the hotels, travel, taxis and the consultation itself (~600 euro’s) then the uvb equipment and pseudocatelese cream etc…. well, it’s expensive to treat this condition and with no guarantees either
    – Griefswald is a pain in the proverbial to get to… quickest train from Berlin is 2hrs 20.. as the consultation says it will finish approx. 13.00 hrs on the second day, the train I found from the station back to Berlin was 14.37 arriving 17:30.. so allow plenty of time for flight times etc based on how you will get to and from Griefswald

Uplifting to hear of people’s experiences with this treatment – and thanks to Simon for sharing his experiences. If not for this blog, I would not have stumbled across the Professor’s treatment, and for the first time since having this condition, I feel like I can see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel!

I see plenty of traffic about Pseudocatalase but I am surprised no one has mentioned trying methoxalen. It is very effective for the face. I tried it and it worked immediately.
